Originally developed in the 1980s, transcranial Doppler (TCD) uses ultrasound to non-invasively assess cerebral blood flow velocity in the major conducting arteries of the brain. TCD is well documented in medical literature as a useful tool in the assessment of a wide range of neurological conditions involving blood flow dysfunction. Its high sensitivity facilitates post-stroke monitoring, cryptogenic stroke assessment, shunt detection, and more. In fact, the Joint Commission requires TCD in order to be recognized as a comprehensive stroke center.
