Mark Laret

President and CEO, UCSF Health

Mark R. Laret is president and chief executive officer of UCSF Health, an internationally recognized medical institution with more than 950 beds, nearly 2 million outpatient visits and annual revenue of over $5 billion. UCSF Health has affiliations with top health care organizations throughout Northern California. Laret is also a founder of Canopy Health, a doctor- and hospital-owned accountable care network of more than 4,000 health care providers in the San Francisco Bay Area.

At UCSF Laret has led initiatives to improve patient and family health care experiences, to improve the quality and safety of care, and to establish a regional network of hospitals and physicians. He oversaw planning, financing, philanthropic support and construction of UCSF Health's newest $1.5 Billion hospital complex – UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay – which opened in 2015 and includes hospitals for children, women's services and cancer, as well as an outpatient center.

Laret joined UCSF in 2000. He has more than three decades of experience as a health care executive and is a national leader in health care reform. He held several leadership positions at UCLA Medical Center from 1980 to 1995 before serving as CEO of UC Irvine Medical Center from 1995 to 2000. He is chair of the board of directors of Canopy Health and past chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Council of Teaching Hospitals and the California Hospital Association.  He serves on the board of directors for NASDAQ-listed Nuance Communications, and previously served on the board of NYSE-listed Varian Medical Systems.

Laret earned a bachelor's degree at UCLA and a master's degree at the University of Southern California (USC), both in political science.
