The Latest Advancements and Clinical Research in Right-to-Left Shunt Detection – A Physicians’ Roundtable Discussion

December 6, 2023
9:00AM PST

The objective of this roundtable webinar is to foster a collaborative and informative discussion among medical experts focusing on physicians' experiences with robotic Transcranial Doppler (TCD) in the detection and diagnosis of Right-to-Left Shunt. We will be discussing the most recent multi-center study published in October’s Stroke Journal and CHI Memorial’s 3-year study that compares robotic TCD and TTE for shunt detection. In addition, Dr. Mark Rubin, Dr. Ruchir Shah and Dr. John Volpi share their clinical research, best practices, and real-world experiences in using robotic TCD technology for the detection of RLS. This event will serve as a valuable resource for healthcare providers, enabling them to make more informed decisions and improve patient outcomes in the field of cardiology and neurology.

Mark Rubin, M.D.

Dr. Rubin is a practicing vascular neurologist, Service Chief of Neurology at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center near Chicago, IL and an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Loyola University Medical Center Stritch School of Medicine. He has approximately thirty peer reviewed published manuscripts, and is first or senior author on nearly all of them. He has conducted original investigations in several areas within neurology including but not limited to stroke, epilepsy and the alien limb phenomenon but the focus of research and basis for promotion has been neurosonology (transcranial Doppler and carotid duplex ultrasound). He was the National Principal Investigator for a device trial (NCT04604015) of robot-assisted transcranial Doppler vs transthoracic echocardiography for the detection of right to left shunts. He has been a Co-Chair of the American Society of Neuroimaging (ASN) Neurosonology Examination Subcommittee since 2017, playing an integral role in the development and maintenance of both of the IAC-approved RPNI and NVS credentialing examinations. He joined the ASN Board of Directors in 2023.

Ruchir Shah, M.D.

Dr. Ruchir Shah, vascular neurologist and stroke program director with CHI Memorial Neuroscience Institute, provides highly skilled care in the treatment of stroke and conditions of the nervous system and brain. Dr. Shah is certified by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry in general neurology and in a vascular neurology subspecialty. Dr. Shah is leading research to advance stroke treatment options.  He is the principal and subinvestigator with Chattanooga Center for Neurologic Research, specializing in acute and secondary stroke prevention trials and the director of stroke clinical practice at StatMDUSA Tele-Neurology, an acute stroke and neurology company providing neurology protocol education to small community hospitals as well as large academic centers.

John Volpi, M.D.

John Volpi, M.D., is the Co-Director of the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center at Houston Methodist and Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Institute for Academic Medicine. His research interests are in the management and prevention of ischemic stroke and the critical care of patients with neurological illnesses such as intracerebral hemorrhage ,epilepsy, and nervous system infections. His studies also involve the use of ultrasound in the evaluation of blood flow to the brain and the development of novel therapies for improving patient outcomes in stroke. Dr. Volpi received his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine.
